Punalu’u Black Sands Beach

Black Sands Beach

Punalu’u is a beautiful black sands beach, in our opinion, the best on the Big Island. Even the turtles believe this to be true, and turtles are pretty smart! This is a known resting spot where the honu (sea turtles) slowly crawl out of the salty South Pacific water and onto the beach to enjoy an afternoon nap.

Only 52 miles Southwest of Kona Bayview Inn, this beach is a great place to stop for a stroll on your way to Volcano National Park. The bathrooms are clean and there is a small gift shop on the beach.

Why we like Black Sands Beach

  • Beautiful and soft black sand
  • Restrooms
  • Turtles are often present resting on the beach
  • Lifeguards on duty
  • Gift shop
